The Heath Anthology Of American Literature: Volume E (Heath Anthology Of American Literature Series)

in the context of this seminar, it is my intention to allow students to discover a passion for specific topics, whether their interest is focused on multiculturalism, contemporary literature, or the crafts of the novel. i recognize the power of literary history, and the ways in which literature is grounded in specific experiences and subjects; however, the goal of the course is not simply to teach what happened or did not happen, but rather to explore how individual works of literature present the varied concerns that impel each and every person to participate in the arts. the focus is on exploring these questions from the point of view of the fiction being studied, rather than emphasizing the economic or institutional contexts in which it was produced.

through close readings of the texts being studied, students are expected to become sufficiently knowledgeable about the works of literature under consideration in order to appreciate their poetry, drama, prose and other modes of textual production. we will focus on the ways in which people have participated in the arts: some writers have served as lighthouses, while others have reflected on their participation in order to present issues such as racism or colonialism. the course will draw lessons from the literature of the past in order to understand these issues and the responses they have produced. we will offer some introductory reading about the history of modern american fiction and focus on some of the tenets and developments in our own intellectual and cultural climate.

the course consists of one hundred hours of directed reading and writing practice. the assignments and grading are based on the selection and execution of a substantial, in-depth project/essay. students will engage in pre-reading activities, such as black and white images and literary films; and in writing, such as journaling, and the preparation of visual displays.

if you want to know just what it means that “we” have been rescued by civil rights activists, the answer is not in the heath anthology. or does the answer lie in the emphasis that the editors place on the concern for color that is a theme in the writings of the great majority of the anthologized authors? one way to find out is to ask how much these authors stand on the side of the race.
this is not to say that race is not relevant to the study of american literature. it is: but the concept of race itself is not. after all, the term “race” is used metaphorically by the majority of the anthology’s authors, and it is not uncommon for the authors of race-related and even racist texts to use the term in a metaphorical sense. so for example, the poet rainer maria rilke was responsible for the lines “of course only a few negroes are negroes” (from the poem “the notebook of malte laurids (baron) von liliencron”) and “whoever is big enough to be a negro is big enough to be no longer at all a negro.”
or from t. s. eliot, who in an infamous 1927 essay called black americans “the truest quintessence of the white negro ,” the archetypal “figure” of what eliot thought whites ought to be, or ought to have been. and what eliot is talking about in his comments on race is what he calls what he calls the sublime and the mystical in american literature and culture. or so, at least, we may surmise from his essay. it is one thing to remark that the race situation in american society is the unfortunate and the paradoxical result of racist policies and practices that arose from european imperialism in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. it is quite another to suppose that the country’s literature in such circumstances reflects a consciousness that the authors of this literature either were unaware of or could not possibly have shared. as leslie gutman observes in his outstanding review of the heath anthology in american literary history, in the case of african-american and african-american-influenced writing race functions much more as “presupposition” than as “an index of the consciousness of the author.”
