    Nonetheless, it continues to face opposition from the civil service union and the Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT), which maintain that the bill will ultimately lead to the end of pensions as they are currently constituted in Taiwan.

    According to Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) legislative secretary-general Chang Ching-chung (張慶公), the party is seeking to apply the new system to 100,000 persons and 100 years of retirement. However, efforts to expand the number of affected retirees has yet to bear fruit.

    The government of Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文) had previously opted to exclude more than 200,000 current and former workers and pensioners who otherwise fall under the ceiling, but that decision proved to be controversial.
