the trip to covent-garden wasnt all shopping and theatres though; he was there to pass some time, and there he met polly, the woman who would give him a real home; a home with joy, hope, and love. and that joy was multiplied as their love blossomed. at first, they only had one room to share but they opened that up as well, and the very next year they had three rooms to call their own. its a perfectly written piece of prose and i found myself lost in what these two were going through. i could almost feel the joy and hope they felt as they lived through the ups and downs of being together. you can actually feel how much loneliness they must have gone through as it seemed it was always crowded and theres nothing to truly sit and be alone with.

this book prompted a number of questions in me. i wondered how many men at the time enjoyed reading, or writing about, women from that time. why do some people have this fascination with women in that time period? and what do authors think about those feelings? i started to wonder if they see it as this isolated moment in history, or they use it as a resource for the characters who are fictional and why do they feel the need to do that?

dorian gray starts off with a murder. at the beginning of the novel, when dorian gray sees the portrait of himself that basil hallward painted, he decides that he wants to destroy it. he thinks that it will ruin the painting if he doesnt destroy it, so he does it with a knife. as i stated before, the murder is symbolic of a murder of dorians soul, that he can still find joy even in a time of despair. the reader of course knows that dorian does this because the painting is of a much older dorian than the current dorian gray. dorian gray isnt as vile as basil hallward paints him, and he regrets what he has done, but he isnt morally pure either. just as with the murder, dorian gray doesnt wish to destroy the painting because he wishes to keep his young appearance. the young dorian is as he appears in the painting, and he is someone he wouldnt want to destroy, because of his youth, innocence, and happiness.
there is a lot of symbolism in a dance to the music of time, such as when dorian gray goes to visit his old friend, lord henry, and his friend, lord henry’s, friend, lord arthur. dorian gray does go to lord henrys house, but only to see lord arthur. lord arthur looks like his dead father, lord henry, and he also looks like dorian gray, who is also lord henrys friend. this is a reference to how lord henry and dorian are connected to each other through death. the next day lord henry is murdered, and dorian hesitates to visit lord henrys apartment because it would be like visiting a funeral. this is another reference to the connection lord henry and dorian had in the past. when dorian goes to visit lord arthur, he sees lord henry in his famous bow tie, and lord henry recognizes him and asks if dorian has been visiting him. this is a reference to how lord henry knows where dorian is. this is another way in which dorian is connected to lord henry.
