abbott’s rich characterizations combine romantic understanding with high skills and intelligence, while his cinematic timing creates an evocative mood that lends dramatic weight to abbott’s affectionate and absorbing story. abbott’s romantic understanding is at its best with his characterization of harrison, the young navy man who begins the action as a heartless liar who steals from the navy to run a seedy gambling house. but by the time harrison hears abbott’s telephone call to end their relationship, abbott has developed a certain empathy for harrison and the two men’s relationship is stronger than ever. abbott works quickly and efficiently to bring the situation to a full stop so that he and harrison can return to their home life and look forward to a long future together. the story reflects abbott’s temperament and ability to bring out the romantic and heroic in his characters.

this columbia serial is not properly considered a mystery series, because the mystery element in it is an afterthought, and its lack of any real logical solution does not square with the designation of a mystery serial. rather, this serial uses the then-novel form of a detective story in which the detective works in a setting alien to him (that of the criminal), and in which he solves the mystery by manipulating and exploiting the criminal’s knowledge of himself and his world. in this way, he discovers clues he otherwise wouldnt have seen. the columbia serial plays this game to perfection, fleshing out the rich characterizations of the larrinias the black hand, and providing a strong and ingenious script. we know the larrinias has a vast skill base, from burglary to blackmail, and his actions reveal a great deal about his personality.
