Exposure emulation is the only main issue, but it’s rather serious. Like the version 4.6 beta, the 5.0 version also needs a calibration. However, it does require a full photoshop CS3 installation, which is now what it calls a “fully-featured” edition. Lightroom 5, for instance, is hopefully not going to require a more powerful computer.

My experience is that at best, Photoshop used to be slow and now, in Lightroom 5 at least, it’s even slower. I don’t know if there is a significant difference in core processing time or something else. If Lightroom 5 can be improved, then it’s better to wait for Lightroom 6. More importantly, I find using Lightroom 5 too complicated as compared to Lightroom 4. For one thing, Lightroom 5 is far less intuitive. And then there’s the fact that, even after all the new features, the interface is virtually the same as before. The only real improvement presented in this version is the Apple support. As you can see from my screenshot, the new product support information appears when you open the “Help” panel. I found it hard to find the “Help” panel in previous versions of Photoshop. If you learn a bit of Japanese, you will still find the “Help” panel’s location among the icons at the upper-right corner (see screenshot below, too).

The best point made by Adobe is that Lightroom 5 packs rock-solid stability into a graphical interface that’s rather intuitive. If Lightroom can survive out of beta and stay that way, then Lightroom 5 is definitely the future of photo workflow software. For now, my advice is to stay away from Lightroom 5. However, as I’ve said, my experience hasn’t been bad as such, and I’m sure it will be OK once more time goes by. I can’t guarantee that Adobe won’t improve the experience in future releases.

I can’t count on my right hand how many times I’ve had to use the Layer Combi Box to comb through a folder of images to select layers, only to realize I’ve removed all of the layers from compositions or damaged them when trying to add multiple to the same one. The lack of a better, built-in method to select multiple layers is one reason why people love using Photoshop.

Software changes are inevitable, and Photoshop has evolved with new features as the times do. After being around for nearly 40 years, most of us are fairly sure that the current design is going to be around for a while.
