(The “iso” part of the language code means it’s stored in its Unicode format, as opposed to the “8859” of Win2K and XP which means it’s stored in the older Windows ANSI-based format.)
At this point, the Linux system should store the new subtitles in the file system in a format that it understands. This will allow VLC to properly display them on screen.
The problem is that this approach also affects all other applications that are configured to use these same translation formats. How to fix that?
To fix that, you will need to put the Linux-speak system into its own separate /etc/environment file. The new, separate file will be called /etc/environment-Italian. It will not affect applications in this file’s directory structure or in application configuration, but only applications in this file’s main one.
