after failing mario’s secret levels, mario goes to the house of seven doors to ask for help. uncle monty gives mario the mario bros. hand and explains that he has 7 keys. mario is then sucked into a portal. eventually, mario (and the others) get sucked to bowser’s palace. bowser then reveals that the portal he sent mario in was just a diversion. the portal leads to the underground castle where bowser is waiting for mario. bowser then captures mario and sends him back to the first door he entered. mario asks donkey for help, but donkey says that this is not a place for him. donkey then leaves. mario then finds a door labeled “mario’s secret level,” and bowser reveals that he captured mario to force him to solve a puzzle (mario’s secret levels) he created. after mario loses, he and the other five have to jump down a pit to get bowser’s help. after doing so, mario meets goomba and gets a giant key that he and the others use to get back into the castle.
during the game mario & yoshi: super mario galaxy 2, yoshi meets baby mario and diddy kong in space. baby mario is an extraterrestrial sprite that lives in a planet inside a star. baby mario tells diddy about his egg that he found in the stars. yoshi volunteers to find the egg, and he and baby mario find the egg near the sun.
from mario superstar baseball, donkey kong was the primary antagonist to the red koopa troopa, and would often play and call him a dirty name whenever he would bump into him. regardless, the red koopa troopa was often on friendly terms with the current donkey kong, sometimes acting as his unofficial guardian. the red koopa troopa would even protect donkey kong from a spike trap, much to donkey kong’s delight. however, donkey kong’s latest appearance, in mario party 10, was much more hostile to the red koopa troopa, kidnapping him as he claimed himself to be a real koopa along with toadsworth. however, they were released when mario, luigi and toadsworth find a “friend mode” on their handhelds.
when the game was originally announced, the game was going to be a very similar donkey kong adventure to the mario series. in the later announcement, the game was cut down a bit and became more of a side-scrolling platformer.
the second version of the game was also released on virtual console on the nintendo wii with the nintendo gamecube version of the game. this version features all of the features of the gamecube version of donkey kong 64, and also features music borrowed from the original famicom version of donkey kong and the original snes version of donkey kong.
shortly after the gamecube version’s release on virtual console, the gamecube version of donkey kong 64 was removed from the system and it was replaced by the virtual console on nintendo ds. the nintendo ds version includes a few extra features such as the ability to play against up to four other players, that are played in a multiplayer mode.
donkey kong 64 is the first game in which donkey kong appears in a fighting game in the mario series, and also the first time he has a fighting game cameo appearance. he’s the arcade mode’s second boss and the last fighter in the game. unlike all other fighters, he is able to have chills, a special move that can be used only once.
mario’s wife, luigi’s sister peach is now an independent character, replacing luigi in the game. she can be purchased at various places such as the mushroom mountain’s secret area. unlike her brother, she can shoot tennis balls; her gun is the banana blast. at one point in the game, there is a battle where this character is defeated. however, players can make use of the nintendo power code and the boost provided by this character. peach has the highest falling speed and reach of the mario bros.
