As much as I hate to say it, I don’t like it that much. It’s good, but not that good.
For all that I hate it so, in some ways it’s a decent evolution for Windows 3.1. The new skin is much easier on the eye, and finding icons doesn’t force you to scratch your head for ages the way it did. Then, you know, there’s the notepad.exe icon. I’m sure you can find a lot of nostalgia in that.

Just thought I’d share, and I recommend that you try it. There are the 7 in-built skins, and on the site there’s a bunch of skins available. The problem is that some of them aren’t really skins, they’re just icon collections, and often they’ve got a crap load of icons on them. So when I want a set of icons that’s actually a skin, I need to look for one that contains most of the icons I want.
I’d have thought that the second wallpaper is an example, but it’s not. It’s the same wallpaper, and it is decorated, but it’s all missing icons. What it has is a terrible selection of icons, and when you try to add the ones you do get it’s a write mess. I’d pay money to be able to get that many icons from that wallpaper.

It’s really that simple. If you want another wallpaper to get a feel for it – you need the one in 7. Perhaps you have an old computer, and want to emulate that experience? Go for the free drownd3r7 wallpaper. But if you want to have a reasonable choice of icons, there are things you can do.
First, click on the ‘3’ tab in the main window. Here you can add icons to the current desktop wallpaper. This is the best way to get a skin with lots of icons. Plus, you can just get the default icons to save on disk space. A set of the most commonly used icons – like ‘File’ and ‘Printers’ and ‘Phone’ – can be found here – on the Internet.
You can just head to the Stardock web site (it takes you there), and download packs of icons. It’s a free service. It’s just that the packs aren’t as good as the standalone skins. So,
