AutoCAD was first released in December 1982 by AutoDesk. The product was developed to be a low-cost alternative to other CAD programs, namely MicroStation, and is still very affordable today, but much more advanced than its predecessors. In 2002, version 2002, AutoCAD was released on the Microsoft Windows platform as part of the “Inventor” product line, which was discontinued in 2009. AutoCAD is now a part of the AutoCAD family. AutoCAD 2002 and AutoCAD 2004 are still available as stand-alone products.
