Post-processing is where the real difference between Lightroom 4 and 5 is. With Lightroom 4, you can brighten, darken, blur, sharpen, etc. Lightroom 5, on the other hand, is much less flexible. You can sharpen in Lightroom 4, but Lightroom 5 will tell you to use the Smart Sharpen. It’s exactly the same function, with one difference: in Lightroom 5, Smart Sharpen will apply the sharpening algorithm that, in my opinion, is by far the best. After using Smart Sharpen, there’s still the option to bring in a dedicated sharpening tool, though. This Sharpening tool is still largely unsatisfactory, as it is only for recent versions of Photoshop. I am disappointed that Adobe didn’t proceed with making a reciprocal, dedicated Lightroom Sharpener tool for Photoshop.

Lightroom for Mac users are still faced with the upgrade mess. Lightroom 5 is a long way off for me personally, and even if I did upgrade, I doubt I would ever get another Lightroom. (I’m talking about the CS6 version.) Since I do a lot of scanning, Lightroom 4 is the only version I’ve been able to work reasonably well with. I have had some problems with Lightroom 5 on the Mac, mostly with the first 1.00 GB version. I don’t know if they’ve scaled back the number of pictures that can be imported. I have the same issue on Windows 7, which I consider to be less than ideal. Not only does it import a lot of thumbnails, but it doesn’t let you preview all of them at once. It’s extremely annoying. There are several issues to work through too. For one thing, Lightroom 5 will import an unlimited number of face tracks, but only a limited number of raw files. You can still only import a limited number of images at a time. Lightroom 5 also still seems a little slow in the Importing/Exporting phase. I have not been able to rest my finger on the reason for this, but I have noticed that if you accidentally try to add an image in the middle of a catalog, it will come up with this error message: “Could not import image from ‘%s’”. (I’m not sure why there is a need to import an image at all since you can browse catalogs and add images online, though.) I also don’t like the new granularity of color when doing an Image Export. With Lightroom 4, you had a series of color schemes that allowed you to change the color when you were Export selecting images. In Lightroom 5, you can still change the final image color, but you will not be able to change the color during Export. This leads me to believe that with Lightroom 5 we are losing some functionality, but I haven’t been able to find out what it is.
