In ancient Egypt, medicinal plants were used for more than 4,000 years. Egyptian pharmacopoeia consisted of the powder of plants used in that country; it was written down on papyrus and eventually codified in texts.

Thus, volatile oils (Table 1), which are rich in terpenes, exhibit low toxicity and a favorable safety profile. In addition, the exudate of the plant (1-2% or more of the mass), comprising the organic matter, has shown significant antioxidant and radical scavenging activities (Figure 3). These properties may have been instrumental in Egyptian phytotherapy, since they have sustained a positive impression on older ancient Egyptian pharmacopoeia books. For instance, a publication of the 10th Century B.C. Herbal presented 520 drugs prepared from 264 plant species and described how to prepare 50 of those drugs.

The volatile oil was also tested in vitro for the determination of its antioxidant activity. It exhibited a strong antioxidant activity by scavenging a stable free radical, DPPH, and a stable radical, ABTS. It also showed reduction of the superoxide anion (Figure 1). The antioxidant activity of the volatile oil is higher than that of l-ascorbic acid, a known antioxidant, at the same concentrations of the antioxidant studied. This activity is equal to that of flavonoids, the best known antioxidants. The volatile oil exhibited a dose-dependent reducing activity, indicating that the volatile oil is an antioxidant that scavenges free radicals. This effect was enhanced by synergism of the antioxidant activity of both the volatile oil and l-ascorbic acid. The antioxidant activity of the volatile oil and l-ascorbic acid were calculated in terms of EC50 and percent inhibition, indicating that they are comparable. The effect is in agreement with the MTT cell viability results in the chick embryo culture model, where no toxicity of the tested volatile oil was observed. The results indicate that the volatile oil is safe for clinical use.

In this study, the 16S rRNA gene was used to confirm the role of reference laboratory methods, and to establish the accuracy of methods used in clinical laboratories, to detect pharmaceutical microbial contaminants in pharmaceutical products [ 24 25 ]. The validity of all bacterial identification was confirmed by BLAST (Basic Local Alignment Search Tool) and the related sequences deposited in the GenBank database. As described in a recent review [ 23 ], the 16S rRNA gene has been widely used for taxonomic purposes in bacterial identification because of its high stability [ 22, 26 ]. While some studies have been published that compared the accuracy of molecular tests and culture-based methods for the identification of pharmaceutical contaminants in drug products [ 27 ], none of them have focused on Egypt. For this reason, the present study aimed to determine the accuracy of the identification of the selected pharmaceutical bacterial contaminants in products sold in the Egyptian market.
For immediate use by the therapeutic community, the Approved Drug Products with Therapeutic Equivalence and/or Pharmacokinetic Evaluations (“Orange Book”) of the USP (July 2009), the EP (November 2009), and the JP (March 2011) now provide a basis for ensuring drug quality, safety, and efficacy. The Asian Pharmacopoeia Group (AP-G) was founded in 1992 and includes experts from the Pharmacopoeias of Japan, China, Korea, Pakistan, and India. Presently, there are a total of 13 Members representing countries across Asia: Bangladesh, China, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Myanmar, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Thailand, and Vietnam. The AP-G hosts a series of symposia to address issues related to developing Asian Pharmacopoeia.
